graphics standards manual?!

i'm having a really hard time finding standards manuals for the things i'm interested in...but i did stumble across this article, which was pretty entertaining. his argument isn't all that strong (because "it's ugly" can only be used a certain number of times before i start to doubt his evidence), but it is a pretty controversial thing they made. ...comments?

it seems that the only graphics manuals i can find online are those of universities; therefore, i picked NYU. here you go.

  1. The NYU guide is a good example of a proper blend of visuals and text explanations to explain identity standards. Keep this as a reference!

  2. Hey thanks for the link.

I wrote that a long long time ago, just re-read it today for the first time in a while. Man I did call it "ugly" in almost every other paragraph. haha

I think I'd write it differently if I were writing it today. I also must admit the logo's branding scheme has grown on me slightly in some of the places I've seen it used with photographs in the shapes but overall I stand by my assessment.

  3. oh wow, i never expected the author to find this! hopefully you keep that in mind when you read my 'criticism' of your article :)

i definitely think it's controversial, and i've heard from many others that they also think it's ugly, but it's a good design piece to discuss, i think. it has it's merit (you can't ignore it, and in some weird way, it does harken back to the decades and art movements it cites) but at the same time, does it reflect what it is meant to, and embody the entire message the london olympics need to send out? i don't think it does. i think it's too controversial and people will be distracted by their initial discomfort, even if they later realize they like it.

i don't think design should call more attention to itself than what it is trying to convey or represent.
